We are proud to announce that The Canopy, by Patricia Clark, has won the 2018 Book Award from the Poetry Society of Virginia. Patricia was honored at this year's Poetry Festival on May 5, 2018, in Williamsburg, Virginia. She gave a reading from her winning book.

How do we move forward after enormous loss? Perhaps like the lightning-struck tree, “half of it shorn of leaves the other half full, standing, / swaying….” In these beautiful, intimate poems spoken from the heart of grief, the speaker urges herself not to flinch, “letting the knife settle where it will, / blade nestled between a rib and a rib.” Life and death go hand and hand here, and the natural world that consoles is also a constant reminder of our own mortality. Because Clark is a terrific poet, she can also make something true and moving “out of cold air…with lamenting words…an invigorating, heel-kicking tune.”

Patricia Clark is the author of four volumes of poetry, most recently Sunday Rising. She has also published two chapbooks: Wreath for the Red Admiral and Given the Trees. Her work has been featured on Poetry Daily and Verse Daily, and has been published in such journals as The Atlantic, The Gettysburg Review, Poetry, Slate, Kenyon Review, New England Review, and Prairie Schooner. She was a scholar at the Bread Loaf Writers Conference and has completed residencies at The MacDowell Colony, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Tyrone Guthrie Center (in County Monaghan, Ireland), and the Ragdale Colony. Awards for her work include a Creative Artist Grant in Michigan, the Mississippi Review Prize, 2nd Place in Nimrod’s Pablo Neruda Prize, the Gwendolyn Brooks Prize, and co-winner of the Lucille Medwick Prize from the Poetry Society of America. She is Poet-in-Residence and Professor in the Department of Writing at Grand Valley State University and was honored to be poet laureate of Grand Rapids from 2005-2007.
